SOLER, Blai (*1977)

El autor: Blai Soler (Barcelona, 1977) studied at the Conservatori Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona (Alex Garcia and Eva Graubin, violin), at the Royal College of Music of London (Felix Andrievsky, violin, Edwin Roxburgh, composition) and at King's College, London (George Benjamin and Silvina Milstein, composition), where he is currently working on his PhD. His PhD studies have been supported by a PRS Foundation Scholarship.

His works have been performed worldwide by prominent soloists and ensembles, such as clarinettist Cristo Barrios, pianists Rolf Hind and Llyr Williams, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Modern, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Trio Arbós, members of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Lontano Ensemble and Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien, among others.

Recent news include the premiere of his large ensemble piece d'amor i mort by the Ensemble Modern in May 2009, the premiere of his piano trio Tankas by the Spanish Trio Arbós last March - a commission from the Festival Nous Sons in Barcelona - and, previously, the premiere in London of Oboes by the baroque group The Oboe Band - a commission from The Oboe Band with the support of the PRS Foundation. In May 2008, the Arditti Quartet and clarinettist Cristo Barrios premiered his Clarinet Quintet in Tenerife, Spain.

Blai Soler's works have been recorded and broadcast by the Spanish radio stations Radio Nacional de España and Catalunya Música. Part of his output is published by Editorial Boileau.

As a violinist he has been awarded prizes at international competitions (Júlio Cardona (1997), Pablo Sarasate (2001), etc.) and has performed as a soloist both in Europe and South America.

Blai Soler is also a conductor; he was the founder and director of the Blyth Ensemble (2004-2007)
